Second 'Black Box' Found in China Eastern Plane Crash
A second “black box” has been found from the China Eastern Boeing 737-800 crash in southern China, raising expectations for a clearer account of why the flight plunged into a mountainous area last week. Firefighters located the flight data recorder on a mountainside about 40 meters (130 feet) from the impact point and roughly 1.5 meters (5 feet) underground, according to state media. Experts confirmed it was the second recorder, after the cockpit voice recorder was discovered four days earlier. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the descent from about 29,000 feet (8,800 meters) roughly one hour into the flight before the planned drop. Authorities say rainy and muddy conditions complicated the search, including the creation of a deep pit and widespread debris. The MU5735 crash killed all 132 aboard, with DNA analysis confirming 120 identities. Boeing says a technical team is supporting the U.S. NTSB and China’s civil aviation authority.
