Why American Airlines' 2nd-Largest Hub Is Betting The Next Decade On A Runway That Behaves Like A Connected Device

American Airlines’ growing footprint at Charlotte Douglas International (CLT) is tied to a major runway expansion aimed at the next decade. The airport, a post-US Airways merger hub, handles more than 670 average daily departures and is central to American’s domestic network. CLT is investing about $1 billion in a new runway, designated 19C/01C, after breaking ground in 2023. The runway will be built between two existing parallels, with the plan reduced from roughly 12,000 feet to 10,000 feet, and scheduled for completion by fall 2027. Unlike a traditional strip, it’s set to include advanced sensors and a digital-twin concept for real-time runway data, alongside added taxiways to reduce crossing and improve arrival flow.
