General Staff: Russia has lost 1,416,280 troops in Ukraine since Feb. 24, 2022
Russia has lost about 1,417,770 troops in Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion on Feb. 24, 2022, Ukraine’s General Staff reported on July 11. The figure includes 1,490 casualties suffered by Russian forces over the previous day. The report also lists heavy equipment losses: 12,116 tanks, 24,922 armored combat vehicles, 118,610 vehicles and fuel tanks, 45,754 artillery systems, and 1,924 multiple launch rocket systems, along with aircraft, helicopters, drones, ships and submarines. Ukraine’s General Staff did not disclose its own losses, citing operational secrecy. Independent Western think tanks largely agree Russian losses exceed Ukraine’s, with CSIS estimating a roughly 2.5:1 to 2:1 ratio. A January 2026 CSIS report suggested Ukraine likely suffered 500,000 to 600,000 casualties between Feb. 2022 and Dec. 2025, including 100,000 to 140,000 killed in action.
