The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has launched “Gateside by TSA PreCheck,” allowing eligible TSA PreCheck members without airline tickets to clear airport security and reach gates at select airports. TSA describes the free program as a way to bring back gate-side moments like welcomes and send-offs, which largely disappeared after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks and subsequent tightening of access to secure terminals. Participants must apply online 1 to 3 days ahead and be approved in advance. Approved visitors use a TSA PreCheck lane with acceptable identification and receive access for one calendar day, with permission to leave and re-enter during that day. The program starts at 13 airports, including LAX, Dallas-Fort Worth, Las Vegas (Harry Reid) and Salt Lake City, with more planned.
