Prospects fade for imminent end to Iran war as attacks restart
Efforts to end the Iran war quickly suffered a setback as Israel intensified attacks in Lebanon against Iran-backed Hezbollah while the U.S. conducted strikes on Iranian boats and missile launch sites. CENTCOM spokesman Capt. Tim Hawkins said Iranian boats were 'attempting to emplace mines' and that the strikes were in self-defense and in support of the ceasefire. Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps said its air defenses shot down a U.S. drone and fired at a fighter jet entering Iranian airspace. An Iranian Telegram post linked to the IRGC claimed three Iranians were killed south of Lark Island in a separate strike. Analysts say the renewed hostilities complicate any quick path to a peace agreement. Officials emphasize that the U.S. continues to defend its forces while exercising restraint during the ceasefire. Tehran’s statements highlight a broader strategic standoff that risks escalation and undermines diplomatic efforts. Whether talks will endure these incidents remains unclear as regional actors assess risks and mediators press for de-escalation. Overall, the timeline for resolving the conflict remains uncertain.
