Night and day': Rescuers free swan from fishing line in Worcester pond
A rescuer team freed a swan that had been tangled in fishing line at Institute Park’s Salisbury Pond in Worcester, ending residents’ concerns after reports of the bird being caught near shore. The incident was addressed in the morning of Saturday, June 27, when volunteers from Raptor Tales, a Shrewsbury wildlife rescue group, went to the pond after learning the swan was entangled near the edge of the water close to the Grove Street fire station. Two members of Raptor Tales, Jess Zorge and Matthew Lame, waded about 10 feet into the water and cut the line, retrieving roughly 50 feet of line that included a weighted sinker. Zorge said the male swan then swam away to join its family elsewhere on the pond, and she described a clear improvement compared with the week before. The article says city officials had advised, via a Friday social media statement after consulting the state Division of Fisheries & Wildlife, that the best route was not to interfere and allow the swan to remove the line naturally.
