People rescued from overturned canoe in Burrard Inlet
RCMP Tactical Marine Operations Group (TMOG) and other responding units rescued 11 people after an overturned canoe incident in Burrard Inlet, as part of security operations for FIFA World Cup 2026 activities in Vancouver. On July 5, 2026, around 3:30 p.m., TMOG officers conducting patrols heard a distress call on Marine VHF Channel reporting the canoe off Ambleside Beach in West Vancouver. Four TMOG vessels responded immediately, and the RCMP Emergency Response Team coordinated with BC Emergency Health Services and the West Vancouver Police Department. Officers located 11 people, including several youths, clinging to the overturned canoe; a Tactical Rescue Diver was deployed due to occupants struggling to stay afloat. All 11 were recovered and taken aboard RCMP vessels. Initial medical assessments indicated exposure to cold water, but no major injuries were observed.
