SAR Search Expands for 8 Missing on Anak Krakatau Reporting Trip

A joint search and rescue (SAR) operation resumed Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2026, for eight people who lost contact in the Sunda Strait off Pandeglang, Banten. The team set out at 7 a.m. local time, searching waters around Anak Krakatau, which erupted over the weekend. Basarnas head Al Amrad said the second day was divided into four Search and Rescue Units (SRUs) to expand the area and that the Lampung SAR team joined the effort. SRU sweeps include planned track coverage by vessels KN SAR Tetuka 247 (68.3 nautical miles), KAL Anyer (69.5), and Lampung RIB 01 (67), with specific spacing between tracks. SRU 4 uses Banten RIB 02 to search priority waters near Rakata and Panjang islands. Personnel from multiple agencies and local groups are involved, along with equipment such as thermal drones. Missing individuals include five journalists and a boat captain, among others.
