Shipwreck, apparent human remains found 7 years after fishing boat sank off Rhode Island

A fishing vessel wreck off Rhode Island was likely located nearly seven years after it sank on Jan. 1, 2019, killing three men. Green Oceans, an ocean protection nonprofit, said a July sonar scan identified a potential wreck site 92 feet underwater and that divers visited on Aug. 30, documenting features they say match the 52-foot commercial boat F/V Mistress. Human remains were also found and believed to belong to one of the two fishermen who died—Captain Oscar Diaz or nephew John Ansay—though further study is required. The nonprofit has asked the U.S. Department of the Interior to reopen related Coast Guard investigation efforts and examine whether the nearby Block Island Wind Farm played a role.
