Nigeria said it has not received any request from South Africa to reimburse costs related to repatriating Nigerians who were deported or chose to return home. The response came after South Africa’s Home Affairs department told lawmakers it spent 292.77 million rand (about $18 million) to accommodate and transport tens of thousands of migrants during anti-immigration protests. Nigerian Foreign Ministry officials, including consul general Ninikanwa Okey-Uche, told the BBC that they were not given such a reimbursement request. South Africa’s department said it had written to Malawi, Ethiopia and Nigeria, asking for reimbursement through the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO). The Home Affairs director-general Tommy Makhode described the spending as “unforeseen and unavoidable.”
