Teen boy rescued after days adrift in Alaskan waters

A Coast Guard aircrew spotted Derek Parker Aghnaanga Monday morning, sitting atop an overturned boat in Alaska’s Bering Sea. A nearby good Samaritan vessel pulled him to safety and also recovered the bodies of his two relatives. Rear Adm. Bob Little, commander of the Coast Guard’s Arctic District, said condolences to families and communities affected by the loss of the two mariners. The teenager showed signs of hypothermia when rescued, according to the USCG. The fishing boat captain who aided the recovery, Adam White, told KTUU-TV that Aghnaanga clung to the skiff through the night and cold water around 50°F (10°C), reporting that his brother was still under the skiff before both his brother and cousin died. His mother said he had been without food or water for two days and is recovering at home.
