The secret act of kindness one Michigan teacher did that changed Terry Crews' life forever
Terry Crews traced a major turning point in his life to a Michigan art teacher who quietly helped him secure scholarships years before his fame. In the finale of “America’s Got Talent,” Crews was asked who made him feel his dream was big enough, and he credited Dwight Eichelberg, a Flint art teacher who taught there for 31 years before retiring in 1996. Crews said Eichelberg submitted the teen’s artwork for scholarship consideration without telling him, leading to opportunities at Interlochen Arts Academy and Western Michigan University. Eichelberg, now 82 and farming sweet corn and pumpkins in Linden, said he recognized Crews’ potential despite doubts and encouraged him to pursue opportunities. Crews later arranged a surprise reunion with Eichelberg around 2015. The story connects mentorship in Flint to a long-running creative path.
