Thrown shoe taints Toronto's victory | Arkansas Democrat Gazette
A shoe-throwing incident overshadowed Toronto’s 93-91 home-and-away result in Montreal, where Marina Mabrey scored 30 points and Nyara Sabally hit the winning basket 52 seconds from the end. The Tempo led by 20 but were nearly erased when New York’s 16-4 run cut the deficit, and the Liberty tied it 91-all on a Breanna Stewart layup with 1:30 remaining. Julie Allemand finished with 10 assists and found Sabally for the go-ahead score, ending Toronto’s four-game losing streak. With 1:48 left, Betnijah Laney-Hamilton threw a shoe that struck Mabrey in the back; after a review, officials assessed Mabrey a technical foul for throwing a “projectile on the court,” and Laney-Hamilton was ejected late in the game. The Liberty fell short despite earlier tensions, including double technical fouls in the third quarter. Coach Chris DeMarco said the call surprised her.
