Thrown shoe taints Toronto's victory | Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
Marina Mabrey’s Toronto victory over the New York Liberty was marred by a thrown shoe incident late in the fourth quarter at the Bell Centre in Montreal on Sunday. Mabrey scored 30 points, and Nyara Sabally made the decisive tiebreaking basket with 52 seconds remaining after Toronto squandered a 20-point lead. The Tempo won 93-91 despite a technical foul issued to Betnijah Laney-Hamilton at 1:48 left, after Laney-Hamilton threw a shoe that struck Mabrey in the back. Laney-Hamilton was attempting to return the sneaker to teammate Jonquel Jones after it fell off. The Liberty rallied from a 20-point deficit but fell short; Sabrina Ionescu scored 28 and Breanna Stewart added 22 for New York. Toronto snapped a four-game losing streak, leading 74-54 late in the third quarter.
