Virginia, Democrat hoping to oust Republican tests anti-corruption message echoing around country

U.S. Rep. Rob Wittman, a Republican from rural Virginia, is running for re-election while highlighting less glamorous parts of his background, including work in a tomato cannery and on a fishing boat. His messaging is aimed at voters in a district that leans Republican. Wittman’s Democratic challenger, local prosecutor Shannon Taylor, is presenting a different picture, arguing he is “too busy getting rich” by trading stocks in companies he is supposed to regulate. Wittman denies the characterization and says it is false. The campaign contrast centers on how residents view his record and priorities as he seeks another term this year.
