Ford is recalling more than 741,000 vehicles in the U.S. because a transmission issue may damage the park system, which could increase the risk of a crash or injury, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said. The recall covers certain Ford F-150, Lincoln Aviator, Ford Explorer, Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition vehicles with model years between 2018 and 2021. The report says impacted vehicles may experience temporary engagement of the transmission parking pawl while moving when certain shift commands are issued, potentially damaging park system components. If damage occurs, the transmission park feature may be unable to hold the vehicle if the parking brake is not applied, raising the risk of unintended movement in “park.” NHTSA said Ford is aware of 24 property-damage allegations and nine alleged injuries, including two emotional-injury allegations. Owners will be notified by mail to get a Powertrain Control Module software update to the latest level and have dealers inspect and replace damaged transmission components if needed at no charge.
