Ford recalls 741,000 vehicles over dangerous transmission flaw that could send cars rolling
Ford is recalling more than 741,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to a transmission defect that could compromise the parking system and raise the risk of a crash or injury. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says the recall covers specific Ford F-150, Lincoln Aviator, Ford Explorer, Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Expedition models built between 2018 and 2021. The issue involves the temporary engagement of the transmission parking pawl while the vehicle is moving, particularly when certain shift commands are used, which can damage the park system. If damage occurs, the transmission may not securely hold the vehicle in “park,” especially if the parking brake is not engaged. Ford reported 24 allegations of property damage and nine alleged injuries, including two claims of emotional distress. Owners will be notified by mail and dealers will update the powertrain control module software, inspect the transmission, and replace components if needed at no cost.
