Jay Leno was offered $20M for his McLaren F1 but he declined with a reason that all car lovers will respect
Jay Leno said he was offered $20 million for his McLaren F1 but declined, explaining that he bought the car for engineering and enjoyment rather than investment returns. Leno originally paid about $800,000 for the 1994 McLaren F1, which he says is now worth roughly $20 million. Speaking on the Road to Success Podcast and in a video on his YouTube channel Jay Leno’s Garage, he recalled that someone made the offer and he responded “no, thank you.” He said he avoids investment motives because they can lead to losses, and likened collecting a supercar to buying a great painting rather than hoping a neighbor will pay more. Leno noted that rising value has made him drive more carefully. He added that if another driver—joking about an SUV driver texting—hits the car, replacing carbon-fiber parts could require a multi-year wait from England.
