Trump administration to ban some Canadian motorcycles, dairy, alcoholic beverages in trade war's latest escalation

The Trump administration announced Tuesday a new round of trade-war restrictions that will ban several categories of imports from Canada later this month, escalating retaliation after Ottawa imposed $20 billion in tariffs on U.S. goods. According to the proclamations signed by President Trump, an outright ban on most Canadian alcohol entering the U.S. will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Sept. 29. The same date will bring bans on Canadian motorcycles, whey, molasses and most nonalcoholic beer. The administration will also add a 50% tariff starting next Tuesday on cheese products, steel, aluminum and bamboo furniture. Some earlier tariffs on toilet paper, cement and fishing-rod parts were ended after further research. White House officials accused Canada of not negotiating in good faith, while Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney said the country will match tariffs “dollar for dollar.”
