Compounded GLP-1 injections recalled over sterility concerns
A nationwide recall was launched last month over sterility concerns for compounded GLP-1 medication. Apothecary Pharma LLC initiated a voluntary recall of 22 vials of tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Zepbound and Mounjaro, citing “lack of assurance of sterility.” The recall was classified as Class II on Oct. 8, indicating the compounded product has potential to cause adverse health effects. In the U.S., Gallup data cited in the article says about 11% of adults use GLP-1s for weight loss, and roughly 1 in 5 uses compounded or custom-mixed versions. The article explains that compounded drugs don’t go through the same FDA safety and quality review as approved products. It notes tirzepatide and semaglutide were removed from the FDA’s shortage list in late 2024 and early 2025 and directs patients to check lot numbers against the recall notice.
