Wavelet Medical said it has received an ARPA-H award to validate its novel fetal brain monitoring technology, with funding up to $2.14 million over 12 months beginning in June. The award comes from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health, a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services agency created in 2022 to support high-impact biomedical research that cannot easily be done through traditional routes. Wavelet, founded by CEO Liz Golden, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Emily Lee, and Head of Science Dr. Jose Cortes-Briones, is developing the first non-invasive, AI-powered fetal EEG platform to detect fetal brain distress in real time. The company argues that fetal heart monitoring can be indeterminate in up to 85% of births, potentially contributing to missed hypoxia and unnecessary C-sections driven by false positives. It says more than 35,000 U.S. infants suffer brain injuries at birth annually and about one-third of births involve caesarian delivery. Wavelet is testing at three clinical sites and preparing for expanded trials.
