Canadian tariffs on U.S. milk, perfume, golf clubs and other goods take effect as trade war grinds on

Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion of U.S. goods took effect just after midnight ET Tuesday, deepening a trade dispute between the two allies. The measures, announced two weeks earlier after talks broke down, respond to a Trump administration threat to impose 50% duties on $20 billion in Canadian goods. Canada says it will match U.S. levies dollar-for-dollar. Tariffs range from 15% to 50%: American milk, perfume, video game consoles, golf clubs, fishing rods, steel, aluminum, jackets, and T-shirts face 50%. Cheese, carpets, and some household appliances face 25%, while forklifts and industrial molds face 15%. Canada removed some seafood tariffs after lobster-industry pushback.
