Imax 70 mm screenings become the biggest star for Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey'

Imax 70 mm screenings have become a major draw for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, with the format expected to run for months as demand concentrates on a limited number of theaters. Imax CEO Rich Gelfond said some cinemas have already extended runs, and shared that only a small share of the total Imax network is equipped to project 70 mm due to the high-cost, specialized machinery. One fan, Mike Rohlfing, drove roughly 900 miles round trip from St. Louis, Missouri, to Grand Rapids, Michigan to watch the film. Opening weekend, a typical adult Imax 70 mm ticket cost $27.77, 81% above the average admission across formats, according to EntTelligence. Gelfond reported an average 70 mm-equipped screen generated about $153,000 during opening weekend, while theaters including Cinemark and Regal cited exceptionally strong demand. Nolan’s film is also the first feature shot entirely with Imax 70 mm cameras.
