Nonviolence Week begins in the Valley
Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past is preparing for Ohio’s Nonviolence Week, an initiative tied to the first week of October. The program began in 2009 when local students proposed recognizing nonviolence week in Youngstown after taking part in a “Sojourn” journey to the South. Executive director Penny Wells said she met with students during summer Wednesdays and helped the group organize events that have since expanded beyond schools. Two years later, the week grew to include a parade and rally, with Wells noting it would be the 16th edition. She said the schedule now includes activities every day, with the kickoff on Sunday featuring a parade starting at the intersection of Wicked Wood, walking at 3:00 p.m. after lineup at 2:30 p.m., followed by a rally at the amphitheater. Wells emphasized the focus on everyday interactions and the practice of nonviolence.
