Why isn't Phil Foden playing in England's World Cup clash against Panama?
Phil Foden’s absence from England’s 2026 World Cup squad continues to draw attention as the Three Lions prepare for the final group match against Panama on Saturday, June 27. The Manchester City star was among several high-profile omissions, including Trent Alexander-Arnold and Cole Palmer. The report links the decision to a decline in attacking production: Foden scored 42 goals across 2022-23 and 2023-24, but totaled 23 in the next two campaigns. At club level, he started only 61% of Manchester City matches in 2025-26, after being central during City’s treble-winning 2022-23 season. England’s options in attacking midfield, including Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze, also increased competition. Coach Thomas Tuchel emphasized a “team-first” philosophy, saying championships are won collectively and that specialists are prepared for different match situations. England faces Panama at 5:00 p.m. ET/2:00 p.m. PT at MetLife Stadium and will be broadcast in the U.S. on FOX, Telemundo and partners.
