Backlash as GOP lawmaker doubles down on using AI on bills: 'Incompetent intentionally'
A backlash erupted after Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) doubled down on using AI to draft parts of a congressional bill amendment, after a viral summary appeared to include unedited chatbot text. The amendment summary reportedly used Claude from Anthropic and was circulated with a timestamp, filler text, and the label “Claude responded:”, copied and submitted without edits. News aggregator NewsWire_US flagged the issue on X. Luna responded that her staff used AI to correct a draft and failed to edit it, and later deleted her post, while also urging staff to be more careful. Critics argued it reflected intentional incompetence. Everytown for Gun Safety communications director Max Steele posted on X that it was not a mistake, and journalist Zaid Jilani suggested banning congressional staff from using AI to draft legislation. Luna later said she had instructed staff to double-check more thoroughly.
