She was born June 8, 1938, in Longview, Washington, to Rudolph and Allie Laulainen, and lived in the Longview area throughout her life. Eleanor graduated from R. A. Long High School in 1956 and was elected Lower Columbia College’s first female ASB president in 1957. She married Lynn R. Clapp in 1958, and after his passing in 1989, she remained active in church and local clubs. She later married Jack E. Shumaker in 1998; he died in 2023. Her career included more than 45 years at Weyerhaeuser Credit Union (later Red Canoe Credit Union), retiring in 2001. She was recognized as Longview’s Office Professional of the Year in 1994.
