Microsoft to scale in-house AI chips to multi-gigawatt deployments from 2027
xCruzo Brief
Microsoft says it will scale its in-house Azure Maia AI chip family to multi-gigawatt deployments starting in 2027, positioning the chips as a primary platform for running AI models across its products and services. CEO Satya Nadella announced the plan on X as the company’s “biggest bet yet” on its own silicon, and introduced Maia 300. Microsoft expects Maia 300 to deliver 40% more tokens per watt than leading GPU-based systems. Maia 200 is already deployed across the United States, Europe and Australia and is used in production for services including Microsoft Copilot. Maia 300 is planned for production deployments in 2027 and is designed for long-context and agent-style tasks.
