The developer still making games for the Game Boy

A solo developer in Nottingham, England, is still making new games for the Nintendo Game Boy, despite the handheld having been discontinued in the early 2000s. Alex Hamilton, 30, says he spends hours each day building retro titles to tap into the nostalgia of older hardware, and calls the process a form of “therapy.” He has created three Game Boy games, including his narrative comedy The Train and his newest Lunar Mystery 2103. Hamilton developed skills such as 2D pixel art and worked around limitations like only four background colors and just 23,040 screen pixels versus roughly 2,073,600 on a modern Nintendo Switch 2. He sells his own original work without using Nintendo IP.
