Imposes 50% tariffs on Canadian goods after negotiations collapse

President Donald Trump’s promised 50% tariffs on select Canadian goods took effect just after midnight on Saturday, Aug. 22, after the U.S. and Canada failed to reach a trade agreement. The tariffs were announced in a July 20 executive order and were originally set for Aug. 19, but Trump paused them for three days as negotiations continued. Both countries blamed each other for the collapse late Aug. 21. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was suspending talks and sending negotiators back to Ottawa, arguing U.S. last-minute changes were “unfair” and raised doubts about any deal. Canada said it would retaliate “dollar for dollar,” and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Canada walked away from the offer.
