Qantas’ new ultra-long haul plane is about to arrive, bringing Project Sunrise’s ultra-long range service closer to launch and reigniting debate over comfort on 22-hour journeys. The airline plans daily nonstop flights from Sydney to London starting in October 2027, using a specially ordered Airbus A350-1000 with ultra-long-range capability for the 17,000-kilometre route. The first aircraft is expected to arrive in Melbourne this Friday as part of Qantas’ test program. Qantas says it will offer a seat pitch of up to 33 inches (83 centimetres), up to 2.5 centimetres more than typical economy seats on long-haul flights by Singapore Airlines or Emirates. The aircraft will include a Wellbeing Zone between premium economy and economy. About 60% of seats on Project Sunrise are in economy, and the airline claims the flight could cut up to four hours versus a one-stop service. Ticket sales are set for February 2027.
