Alleged fraud by United Healthcare undermines trust in health system

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell filed a May 29 complaint in Suffolk Superior Court accusing United Healthcare of submitting more than $100 million in fraudulent MassHealth claims. The allegations, if proven, would represent a serious breach of public trust and raise questions about the integrity of the state’s health care safety net. Campbell noted that Medicaid fraud undermines confidence in institutions meant to assist those in need. UnitedHealthcare, Massachusetts’ largest Senior Care Option provider, has described the complaint as meritless and said it does not accurately describe its Senior Care Options program. Under MassHealth rules, payments vary with care level, with 2025 rates cited as roughly $1,305 for Level 1 and $4,265 for Level 3 in Eastern Massachusetts.
