Heard the Jokes": Dwyane Wade Reacts to Miami Heat Changing His Statue After Years of Ridicule

Dwyane Wade explained why he agreed to change the head of his Miami Heat statue after its original unveiling drew criticism over how closely it resembled him. Miami Herald reporter Anthony Chiang shared Wade’s reasoning in a post on X, saying the decision wasn’t about erasing the work or disrespecting the artists, but about being willing to listen. Wade said the backlash began almost immediately, with attention shifting to “the face,” as he heard jokes, saw memes, and read reactions. While he initially felt protective because he was involved in the project, he later reconsidered based on what the tribute meant to Miami. The statue commemorates his March 9, 2009, double-overtime game-winner vs. the Chicago Bulls and the birth of “This Is My House.”
