UTSA Basketball Coach Who Passed Out in Car Moments Before DWI Arrest Suspended Ahead of Season Start
UTSA suspended its men’s basketball coach Austin Claunch after his arrest on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, just days before the season opener. Claunch, 36, was arrested in Corpus Christi, Texas, shortly before 2 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27, after police said he performed poorly on sobriety tests. KSAT-TV reported that he was found passed out inside a Mercedes parked outside a gas station, with slurred speech and alcohol detected on his breath. The coach refused a breath test and was taken to a hospital for a blood draw. UTSA officials announced the suspension Wednesday night and said they will review circumstances and determine the suspension length. Nick Bowman will serve as acting coach as UTSA opens Monday, Nov. 2 at San Jose State.
