Europe used the Paris motor show on Monday to push back against growing Chinese competition, combining a flurry of new model launches with additional EU backing. The event opened days after the EU announced a deal to cap imports of Chinese hybrid vehicles at 350,000 per year. While details weren’t final, European manufacturers broadly welcomed it. Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa called it a “good milestone” but said Italy and the EU must do more on energy costs and carbon rules. Renault CEO Francois Provost described the arrangement as “better than a trade war,” while Changan president Zhao Fei said he wasn’t concerned, viewing it as a step toward “Made in Europe” local content. Roughly 20 Chinese brands, including BYD and Chery, are attending—double 2024—amid export growth as VW deliveries fell 14.3% in Q3.
