WSJ Report: NASCAR is building 80+ race cars for Days of Thunder sequel
NASCAR expects to build more than 80 race cars for the production of Days of Thunder 2, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The sequel, starring Tom Cruise reprising his role of Cole Trickle alongside Anne Hathaway, is scheduled for release in June 2028. NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell discussed the plan during an interview at the Leadership Institute’s offices in Washington, D.C. Cruise confirmed the film at Daytona International Speedway during the end of the 2026 Cup Series season, telling NASCAR’s garage he wants to treat the sport “with respect” and help new viewers understand racing as a team and community. O’Donnell said the sanctioning body was told to be ready for audiences tuning in who have never seen a race. NASCAR previously supported the 1990 film with track access, including race weekend filming and specialized camera cars.
